My Project
My students are learning to have compassion and care for others by providing healthy food. With the growing community and immigrant population, food anxiety is a real issue. So, my students are learning how to "cultivate compassion" by starting an indoor urban garden. My students will learn what is hunger by 1. The materials I am requesting will help my students understand the effects of the growing population has on the economy and understanding the difference between being hungry for lunch and dinner and being hungry for lack of enough food to eat in their communities. They will consider how this population might feel and the signs of these feelings. 2. Students will work towards alleviating the issue of hunger in their community by starting a grow tent in the classroom in order to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to various students and their families. 3. I will measure their successes by keeping data on the amount of food that they produced by integrating their science lessons by collecting data on the plant's growth, production, care, what they need to make things better, and how many families they reached.
Reading about having compassion is good, but learning that there are ways to show others that you care about their needs and have a way to address these needs is an experience that they will never forget.
The air filtration system is needed to help keep the grow tent air circulating and the temperature regulated for optimum growth and production. The lights are to provide the needed artificial sunlight for photosynthesis to happen. The beauty of this project is the fact that the students will grow food year-round.
Help me teach my students compassion in this very unique hands-on way.
