Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. About one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunches and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their excitement for learning, especially if you incorporate things they like doing.

They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.

The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times and we have to constantly look for ways to not only keep students engaged, but also build their skills to prepare for potential future careers. We know that the future will require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but it also requires a stronger background and understanding of science and technology. My students love hands-on learning.

My Project

Our Learning Gardens have seen phenomenal growth this year. There has been more student engagement and more student fun. Students are learning life skills with growing their own food, using screw drivers, drills, and caulking guns.

Now we need to focus on giving our plants some love and making sure they stay watered in the heat and dry of the summer.

The rain barrel diverter is essential to the growth of our earth friendly water usage goals. The hose stand is critical, as the city landscapers some times don't see things that are laying out and might run over them with the mower. The hose stand will keep the garden neat and keep the hose safe. The spray nozzles give us many options on how to deliver the water to the plants. The have shower and soaker settings. These are softer than the normal garden hose stream and will be gentle on the plants. Please help us show our garden tools and plants some love.
