My Students
My students love the magic in learning. I am the Arts Coordinator/Coach at a District 75 school in Brooklyn. We have students in 6:1:1, 8:1:1, and 12:1:1 classroom settings across 5 school sites throughout Brooklyn. Our students are diagnosed with Autism, Speech or Language Impairment, Down Syndrome, and multiple disabilities. Additionally, they have diverse communication needs where some students require the use of a device to communicate. There are students who use echolalia which means they repeat phrases heard and have difficulty expressing their own thoughts. Some of my students have minimal verbal skills where they only babble, some speak in 2-3 word sentences, and some speak in full sentences.
Our students are always motivated to learn when lessons/activities are engaging, applicable in real life, and hands-on.
They especially love read alouds, art activities, and are so happy to participate and help their friends problem solve. To maintain their engagement and facilitate an understanding of learning concepts, they require visuals, clear and bright appealing pictures, hands-on activities, games, and big picture books, and items to meet their sensory needs.
My Project
As a school community, we engage students in numerous hands-on activities to promote student engagement. During the school year, we love to showcase our students' hard work by inviting our school community to see them. We often have virtual showcases where we hold gallery walks to view reading/writing activities and even art galleries to highlight all of our students' skills and achievements.
This year, we would like to promote more socially distanced in-person activities by showcasing student work to the school community.
This panel will help increase the space in our school so that we have more room to display student artwork. Seeing their art displayed will not only promote confidence but a sense of ownership of completed projects.
