Show Your Work On Whiteboard Tables

Help me give my students a long whiteboard table to encourage them to show their work when solving math problems in class. My classroom currently has four small tables, which doesn't provide enough seating for all my students.

My Students

I teach 6th grade math to a diverse group of students in Landis, North Carolina. My students enter my class at various levels of math ability. Many of my students begin sixth grade with math skills far below grade level. Students performing below their peers are on the brink of giving up on math altogether. Some have already given up. I strive to provide them with innovative and fun math lessons. I strive to give them positive math experiences.

In my classroom, it is my goal to meet my students where they are and help them reach their full potential.

I use a problem-based instructional program to get them excited about math. They spend a lot of time discovering, questioning, connecting, collaborating, and problem-solving.

My students often work in small groups to solve complex math problems using multiple strategies. They surprise me with their creative methods for attacking these problems. Most lessons end with a few students sharing their thinking with the rest of the class. We celebrate effort and hard work in my class. Students gain confidence as they take on math leadership roles in the classroom.

My Project

My sixth grade classroom recently acquired four small whiteboard tables with the help of DonorsChoose.org and several wonderful donors. Students are more eager than ever to show their work and work out multi-step problems using colorful markers on these whiteboard tables. Reluctant math learners have been inspired by the new tables to begin working out math problems using multiple strategies.

The number of students in my math class is greater than the number of tables.

Another table will provide more of my students the opportunity to increase their engagement level in math. It is my goal to have ALL of my students actively engaged in solving simple to complex math problems, showing their work, collaborating with their peers, and gaining confidence in themselves while improving their math skills.
