Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How do you demonstrate your understanding of mathematical concepts in a way that allows rapid feedback from the teacher, is easy to use, economical, adaptable, and enjoyable? Whiteboards make practicing a new skill or reviewing a fast paced and fun activity for my class.
My students are a motivated group of 32 fifth graders who live in a very low income area.
They attend a public school that is Title 1 with a very high percentage of English language learners. They love math and enjoy solving word problems using Singapore Math bar model techniques.
My Project
With these markers, we will be able to utilize our whiteboards. Due to funding issues we do not have adequate whiteboard markers for the whole class. The amount requested should outfit my class of 32 with enough markers to last for the school year. We use these markers daily to facilitate practice and review during math time. Students will work individually or in partners to demonstrate what they have learned. It will be easy to identify the students who need further explanations or reteaching before they work completely independently. They will be able to solve complex word problems and be easily be able to erase and make quick changes as they master representing word problems with bar models.
This project will make a difference because it improves student learning.
Everyone is accountable because the teacher is looking at everyones work every time. If a students is struggling it is immediately apparent and reteaching occurs before further confusion and errors occur. By using the whiteboards for practicing both classroom and standardized test scores increased in math with a few students every year earning a perfect score on the state tests. The kids love using whiteboards, too!
