This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Last year in the community there were several negative incidents in the press reported as "problems with Black female students." The tone of these reports didn't reflect the reality of our students. Fast forward one yea: As we organize our social media teams for our school of almost 5,000 students, it's striking to see so many Black female students leading academic and cultural clubs and initiatives around the school. The reality is that our Black girls are achieving and giving back like never before, but we need to show it!

Help us create social media kits with microphones, lighting, and stabilizers to lend out to during-school and after-school clubs that promote engagement, excellence, and achievement for our Black female students.

I have chosen lighting, microphone equipment, and stabilizers to allow student leaders to produce the best quality stories, videos, and posts. The microphones allow for better sound, so we can actually hear what they are saying. The lighting makes the image more clear. The gimbals and stabilizers allow for smooth shots.

I will create two portable kits. The first kit will alternate within several during-school clubs starting with the Entrepreneur Class/Club and Black Student Union. The second kit will alternate within several after-school groups that have high representation of Black female students, starting with our cheerleading squad and girl's basketball team. Student leaders from these groups will receive a kit with the expectation of showing engagement, excellence, and achievement through Instagram stories and video spotlights for district social media.

With proper coordination and organization, we can use social media to start a wave of positivity. I have been successful with this before, but it's important that we take this to the next level. If we don't control the narrative, we risk letting other people tell our story.
