This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school's journey is not your average agricultural experience. Our youth come from mostly urban backgrounds in the city of Milwaukee, therefore we have the unique opportunity to teach them about agriculture and inspire them to explore its many careers. The impact of this type of hands-on learning is seen every day in my pathway, Animal Science. My students learn about all aspects of farm animal production, studying dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, goats, and horses. Since many of my students have never seen these animals I have succeeded in bringing in each animal for the students to have a true "hands-on" learning opportunity. In addition to the farm animals, the Animal Science classes have the unique opportunity to have small animals in our classroom. Students can engage with animals such as parakeet, hedgehogs, chinchillas, iguanas, bearded dragons, turtles, and more. Many of these pets have been donated to our school and provide my students with opportunities not available at most high schools. Even if not every graduate pursues a career in farming, they are going to be consumers, and my fellow teachers and I hope to help make them educated consumers.
My Project
Having these supplies will help my students be prepared and ready to show at the Wisconsin State Fair.
Most have never had this experience before and we strive to make this an amazing experience for them.
By having the hand cart students will be able to easily move animal items to the barn. They will also be able to wash their livestock easily and clean up around their area. When finished the chairs give my students some place to relax and enjoy the fair and their animals.
This program continues to grow here at our school and it is exciting to see the students want to take part in this!
