Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As I begin my second year teaching 4th grade in an inner-city, low income district in California, I’m reflecting on the many ways that I can further help ensure that my students make the academic gains that they need to, despite any obstacles. My lively 24 fourth graders live in an environment where resources are scarce. They, however, are truly excited about learning, love to do well and find great satisfaction in showing me when they have mastered another 4th grade standard! My students’ academic levels range from 1st to 5th grade, including one special education student who is fully included and mainstreamed into the general education classroom and 4th grade curriculum. All of my students are English Language Learners.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned last year, as a first year teacher, is that I need to ensure that all my students have a firm grasp of the material I’m presenting before I ask them to practice it independently. Walking around to every student’s desk to check their work on paper takes a long time, and it takes away from valuable teaching and learning time. Instead of checking each student’s paper, I need a way to quickly assess whether my students are ready to move on!

What I know would help my students progress through their 4th grade math standards are individual whiteboards and markers (with erasers) that my students could use to quickly show me during lessons if they are mastering the material. Using whiteboards as a way to check my students' understanding also adds some fun to learning math--which leads to the engagement of all students. My students love to come to the front of the classroom to show their work on the classroom whiteboard, but it’s impossible to have every student come to the front to demonstrate they know how to do a math problem. With individual boards, after teaching a concept, I can simply give students a problem to solve and they will individually complete it on their white board. After a set amount of time, I will ask all students to show me what they know, at which point they will raise their white boards in the air with the math they completed on them. I will take note of which students did not get the problem right to determine who still needs more help. My students that need extra help will be more easily identifiable to me so that I can intervene before it is too late.
