Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

There are many reasons why my students are special, but the most important reason is that they are eager to beat the odds of their communities.

My current students are big dreamers.

Regardless of the things that are happening around them, they are excited to continue their education. Our school is nestled in the northern part of our city. My students are considered high risk to gangs, drugs, and violence, but they are working hard to avoid being a part of negative statistics.

We are a Title I school where 100% of the students receive a free lunch. Every day, we work together to create an opportunity that will help build a strong and productive future for every student.

My Project

I want to enhance my classroom instruction by exposing my students to real-world financial situations through board games and a video series. My students have been working so hard and deserve the financial literacy resources and technology to help bring them to the next level. The students will create a "Show Me the Money" video series. Their videos will demonstrate how to comparison shop for a car, how to identify the best deal when applying for credit, and/or how to fill out an apartment rental application. Topics will also include paying for college, saving and investing, as well as career choices like financial advisers, accountants, investment bankers, and portfolio managers.

My students are eager to learn, so I might as well make it fun!

Once we script, film, and produce a financial literacy film, it will become a highly motivating effective lesson moving forward, that can be shown over and over.

The funding will include financial board games, cards, and a video camera. The students will work together to put their financial literacy skills to best use. Monopoly, Life, Checkers, Chess, play money and even Uno cards teach players thought-provoking strategies for money management and the impact of financial and investment choices. All of the games deal with financial blows, such as taxes and emergencies and balancing cash flow by earning income. The funding will provide a classroom video camera that we will use to record the video series.
