Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are energetic, imaginative, and creative 5 and 6-year-olds. They arrive at school eager to learn and ready for the challenges of the day!
I teach in an urban elementary school in which all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
I want to provide opportunities for channeling their energy for learning in a safe classroom environment. Having opportunites to engage in developmentally appropriate books to practice sight words is one way to obtain kindergarten reading skills in a productive manner. Exploring and building confidence in reading while using developementally appropriate materials will increase a love of reading and lead to progress in other academic areas as well.
My Project
The short books will provide developmentally appropriate tools to introduce and reinforce sight word learning to my energetic and eager kindergarten students. These books will allow my students to explore reading skills in a safe enviornement using short books with targeted sight word.
Reading is a critical skill to develop in kindergarten and helps build the foundation for many other academic skills needed.
Knowledge of sight words will help my students develop in all academic areas in our kindergarten classroom. Using the short books is one developementally apporpriate way for allowing exploration and discovery condusive to building energetic learners who want to learn!
