As a basketball coach in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. For many of my players, 4th and 4th grade boys and girls, this is the first team they have ever participated on. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my athletes with positive meaningful learning experiences.
My athletes enjoy drills, learning new skills and the camaraderie of being on a team.
Many of them do not experience what many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my gym, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the time we are together practicing. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of athletic discipline and excellence. I would love to see my athletes continue playing in secondary and post-secondary schools.
My Project
I am requesting basketballs to enhance the experience my athletes will have during our team practices. Most students cannot afford to purchase these sporting goods on their own and have not had the opportunity to practice and excel in basketball.
Every child should have the opportunity to explore and pursue their dream.
For many of my players, the dream is one day to play for the NBA or WNBA. If we do not have the equipment we cannot provide them with the opportunities that they deserve. Please help us fulfill the dreams and ambitions of our future.
As they progress, they will be able to work in teams and independently to build skills and to be able to practice not only skills but socialization. Who knows, maybe one day with this exposure, basketball can help get these athletes into college and hopefully achieve their dreams.
