In my classroom, each day my students learn something new about mathematics. Students always ask why they need to learn mathematics beyond basic skills. I strive to demonstrate to my students why what they are learning is relevant to their lives and the real-world.
I teach two Common Core Algebra 1 Classes.
I also teach one 8th Grade Mathematics Class comprised of English Language Learners (ELLs). My students are motivated to learn and often attend extra-help sessions that I offer. Like most middle school students, my students learn best when they are engaged in what they are learning. Our school's current focus is on engagement and I can't think of better way to do that than through the use of technology. Learning about financial literacy would be engaging for my students because it is relevant to their future success.
My Project
Laptops would help me teach my students about financial literacy in a more realistic manner. My Algebra students will soon be learning about compound interest. I would like them to be able to research different available interest rates so that they learn how to compare different financial institutions and make educated financial decisions. I also plan to use PwC's Saving and Investing lesson that teaches about compound interest. Having this technology would help my students research the cost of college tuition and create investment plans so that they have the money then need for college in 4 years. Acquiring these real-world skills will allow my students to better plan for the future and make more informed decisions later in life.
These laptops will create a more engaging and modern classroom for my students.
It will allow for differentiation of instruction so that I can support my students' individual needs. Laptops will help my students connect their mathematics skills with the world outside the classroom. With this technology, I will be able to help my students prepare for the future by learning mathematics skills they can actually use.
