My students are always buzzing with energy. They love to move, chat, participate in hands-on projects, and grow their brains. When they walk into the room, it immediately comes alive with their fun personalities. You would never guess the number of challenges many of them face each day.
As a teacher at a school that services many low to moderate socioeconomic families, it is common for students to come hungry, tired, worried, and without all the supplies they need.
Nonetheless, this never seems to affect their desire to learn and their excitement for school.
I strive to give my students an environment that they are free to explore their wonders, show their creativity, and above all, feel safe. I hope they see school as a place where they can challenge themselves, discover their passion, and feel loved.
My Project
Our current science curriculum is awesome! The students love the hands-on activities and I love the learning that is taking place through labs. With the curriculum (FOSS) comes a lot of supplies that are shipped to our school, and then stored in large black bins.
These bins were tightly and efficiently packed when they arrived to our schools but once items were taken out and used they didn't fit into the same bins quite as nicely.
Currently we are trying to keep things in the black bins based on each unit of study but many supplies are used more often than others (syringes, plastic cups, popsicle sticks). It would be so much easier if we were able to organize the most commonly used items into easily accessible bins and have each bin labeled with what is inside. This would also help our classroom because students could help me get the science lab bins ready by getting the needed items from the correct bin. Currently, we are rummaging through multiple bins looking for items which takes away from our learning!
