Shelf by Shelf: Building Independence for Autism Learners

Help me give my students clear organized spaces that support independence, transitions, and learning with the addition of these five bookshelves.

Mrs. Brown Havelock Middle School
Havelock, NC Grades 6-8

My Project

My students are middle school learners in an Adaptive Classroom Setting for grades 6–8. They have severe to profound disabilities, with a primary eligibility of Autism, and they are learning so much more than academics each day. In addition to the Extended Content Standards, my students are working on communication, life skills, social-emotional regulation, toileting routines, checking schedules, safety, transitions, and building independence. What makes my students special is that they show growth in their own unique ways. Every schedule checked, choice made, routine followed, communication attempt, or calm transition is a meaningful success worth celebrating.

These five bookshelves will make a difference by helping create clear, organized, and predictable spaces in our classroom.

They will be used to define areas for independent work, small group instruction, calming and sensory breaks, life skills practice, free time, and our classroom library. For students with Autism, a clearly arranged classroom helps them better understand where to go, what to do, what materials they need, and what is expected in each space. The bookshelves will also provide consistent places for task bins, books, sensory tools, visual supports, individual schedules, and life skills supplies, which will help reduce confusion and support smoother transitions.

The goal of this project is to create a classroom that students can navigate with greater confidence, safety, and independence. With clearly defined spaces and organized materials, my students will be able to practice checking their schedules, moving to the correct area, making choices, completing routines, and participating in learning activities with fewer adult prompts. These bookshelves will provide more than storage; they will help build a calm, accessible, and supportive learning environment where my students can communicate, regulate, learn, and grow throughout the school day.
