Shedding a Light on the Immigrant Experience Through Shared Narratives

My Project
I teach English and ELD at one of the most diverse schools in the country (60 languages and dialects are spoken here!) We serve a population of immigrants, newcomers, and first-generation students. As one can imagine, the stories that students tell of their journeys from their home country to the United States are tragic, heartbreaking, and inspiring—sometimes all at once!
This year, I want to give immigrant students the opportunity to share their incredible stories with the world at large.
With so much punditry and panic surrounding the topic of immigration, many of us forget the human side: the sacrifices, the danger, and the uprooting it takes for someone wanting to seek a better life in the US.
Because sharing stories is a great way to build language proficiency, I want my students to create mini podcasts about their experiences coming to and living in the United States. The microphones will be used to capture crisp audio as students interview each other and self-interview, building toward a semester-long final project that will be uploaded and listenable by the community.
