Not only did you and the rest of this community come together to fund this in record timing, but the reception of my students to this novel was the highest I've ever experienced.\r\n\r\nSince we have longer periods at my school I make a point of reading each book out loud to my class, from cover to cover. This helps guarantee that every page of this story is read, analyzed, and understood. This also helps me build interest in my students for each story we unfold. Now, I have had small successes each year for each book I've read, however, nothing compares to the level of engagement I witnessed while reading Red Rising. \r\n\r\nTypically, I will get a fraction of the class engaged and enjoying the story, with one or two students that prefer to sit on the edge of classroom discussions suddenly become heavily involved. Not to dismiss this as a major achievement, but Red Rising did this and more. The majority of my students were completely engaged to the point where I would hear them talking about the events and characters of the story outside of class. I had their friends coming and asking me for copies to read it. After finishing the book I had to tell students to stop reading in class, a very rare occurrence, but when I saw that they were reading the second book of the series I truly knew that this project was a success.\r\n\r\nSo, needless to say, thank you for helping me inspire a new generation of readers.","fullyFundedDate":1771523259842,"projectUrl":"project/red-rising-a-scifi-approach-to-activism/10067076/","projectTitle":"Red Rising: A SciFi Approach to Activism","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Haro","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8843814_orig.jpg?crop=1125,1125,x0,y135&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1669785015815","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8843814"},{"teacherId":10239786,"projectId":9678025,"letterContent":"Thank you very much for your generous donation to help out the students here at Crawford High School. The students are really excited to get better at performing with instruments, in this case Violins, and have been utilizing the brand new instruments to fulfill this goal! When the students first received the violins, they were ecstatic to receive brand new instruments and also were really pleased to learn how to set them up as well. \r\n\r\nWe have already started to learn some great musical pieces and the students have worked on getting better at learning the fundamentals of the string instruments. Their progress in learning the instrument has been amazing to watch in class and the enjoyment that I am seeing while they are playing is providing me more of an opportunity to refine their musicianship!\r\n\r\nThe next steps will be a performance in both April and May where we will get to showcase not only these amazing students with the new instruments, but our entire program and explore all of the hard work they have completed this semester!","fullyFundedDate":1765548501321,"projectUrl":"project/learning-through-musicianship-growth/9678025/","projectTitle":"Learning through Musicianship Growth","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Loschen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10239786"},{"teacherId":9820821,"projectId":9519747,"letterContent":"I hope everyone is having a good last few days of 2025. Our semester ended on Friday, I can honestly say it's been my best and most rewarding semesters of teaching yet. The last three weeks, in particular, have been super hectic. So like all other teachers, I'm exhausted and used the first weekend of winter break to do absolutely nothing.\r\n\r\nI just wanted to give an update on the impact of your donations. \r\n\r\nThe reason the last three weeks in my classes have been crazy I was trying to get all the students across an ambitious project called The Immigrant's Guide to Living in the United States. For it, newcomer students wrote about their own journeys, focusing on four areas: Describing their home country and their favorite memories from it, their first impressions of the United States, challenges and cultural differences they noticed, and advice for other newcomers. \r\n\r\nOnce students had finished those, I gave students a choice. If their story was strong and they were willing to, they could read it as a Ted Talk-like presentation at our school's winter VAPA showcase. Otherwise, they'd have to record a mini-podcast using the audio mics that you DonorsChoose supporters helped buy. \r\n\r\nSix students read at the VAPA showcase, and they killed it. Watching them present to their friends, other students, parents, and admin in a new language is one of my all-time favorite moments as a teacher. \r\n\r\nBut then to get 80+ other students to record their podcasts was... challenging. However, I believe that using the mics, trusting students with the technology, giving them agency to tell their stories with semi-professional equipment provided a feeling of responsibility and investment that they hardly get. \r\n\r\nI'm planning to write more about this whole project, including ideas for how to improve it for the future, but I just wanted to thank you all again for allowing me the opportunity to attempt something like this.","fullyFundedDate":1757564478136,"projectUrl":"project/shedding-a-light-on-the-immigrant-experi/9519747/","projectTitle":"Shedding a Light on the Immigrant Experience Through Shared Narratives","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bradford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9820821_orig.jpg?crop=576,576,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754757521649","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9820821"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37521","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1276,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":16,"percentBlack":30,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":47,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"27.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.3,"schoolId":37521,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Crawford High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Crawford High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-diego-unified-school-district/crawford-high-school-idea/37521"}
