My Project

With our science curriculum (FOSS), each student is required/encouraged to bring a composition notebook to use as an interactive science notebook. This item is listed on the district supply list (the list that parents use when buying items for their students before the start of the year), but many times, students bring a spiral-bound notebook instead.

Spiral-bound notebooks fall apart with the amount of cutting and gluing done in the science notebooks, while composition notebooks have turned out to be much more durable.

For this project, the composition notebooks would be given to students who bring spiral-bound notebooks instead.

Pencils are always a huge issue in any elementary school classroom. We never seem to have enough of them, so classroom teachers always use prep time to sharpen them. I have tried many ways to solve this problem: students checking out pencils, pencil war competitions, and community pencils in the classroom. Nothing seems to work.

Next year, I will continue to have a classroom supply of pencils, but I have to find a way for "my" pencils to stand out among the students'. I feel that if I have black pencils (students rarely have black pencils of their own) after a student borrows one, they will know they need to give it back. When desks are cleaned, students will also know the black pencils go back into the community bucket. Problems solved... I hope anyway.

A great pencil sharpener is also important to keep our black classroom pencils sharp, and zipper pouches will help us organize and house the pencils for each table group!
