Sharing Work to Create a Collaborative Learning Environment

My students need more interactive technology tools, such as a document camera, to make learning hands on, to share work, and to promote collaborative learning.

My Students

The best teacher in the classroom is often the students themselves. I want everyone to be a teacher and to be open to learning from each other. A document camera would allow my students to share and project examples of excellent work. It would allow me to guide them through tasks more efficiently.

My students come from some of the poorest neighborhoods in San Francisco and are often multiple grades levels behind.

Despite that, they are excited to participate and share their experiences in the classes I teach which include 9th grade ELA and English Language Development (ELD). My students typically struggled with the foundations of writing, and we have to work hard in order to prepare them for higher level writing tasks such as literary response essays, research papers, position papers, and personal statements. Despite the low skills students bring to High School, I am committed to graduating all of my students college ready.

My Project

When learning how to write a picture is worth a thousand words. I will use the document reader to show examples of essays through each step of the writing process. I ideally will use good student examples, because using real student work is a much more powerful tool than any example I could find on my own. This will validate student effort while guiding students who struggle.

A document reader will help my students learn.

It will help them share their expertize that all students bring to the classroom. It will help them become teachers themselves as we all have something to teach and to learn.
