My Students

My 3rd through 5th grade students are highly motivated and eager to learn. They come from a plethora of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, which creates a catalyst for these differences to come together, creating a truly unique music class. Despite many of them being affected by Hurricane Harvey, they have chosen to band together, and created a school environment filled with kindness towards each other, and their communities.

Within each of these students lies a bright future, and their hunger to soak up knowledge allows me to be a part of it.

I often find myself steering discussions about musical concepts that are surprisingly mature and astute for their age. These are the kind of students push me to give 110% as a teacher, and the result explodes exponentially because of their creativity and drive.

My Project

We are requesting ukuleles and assorted rhythm instruments which will help ignite my students' passion for sharing music in the community. I hope to create extra-curricular ensembles which give students the opportunity to share their talents with their friends, family, and community in which they live. By including both pitched and un-pitched instruments, I hope to satiate a wide variety of my students musical interests.

Ukuleles are also becoming more prevalent in today's popular music, which can help students personalize their learning in a way that can help them achieve both short and long term musical goals.

Adding these instruments to my classroom will also give me more opportunities to move from STEM to STEAM. They will have the opportunity to perform, compose and collaborate in an ensemble that celebrate differences, and creates a safe space for students to explore their self-expression.
