“I can do it!” are the words I love to hear from my students. I teach special education in a low-income/high poverty school district, and my students encounter barriers inside and outside of the classroom. Outside of the classroom my students encounter lack of income, homelessness, and health and nutritional vulnerabilities. Inside the classroom my students encounter barriers such as lack of prior knowledge and behaviors that impede their education. I grew up in the same urban setting as my students. Despite the many challenges they face, I will always provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I love teaching special education because I see the impact I have on my students every day!
My Project
I am a special education teacher at an urban school. My students need a place where they can feel comfortable and safe to express their emotions, especially when frustrated. My students are in elementary school so they require support and manipulatives in expressing their needs. The emotional rug is a highly visual, colorful carpet which features different emotions to encourage group discussions and a way to cope.
My students love movement; however, there are times where they must be in their seats.
The bouncy bands will be used in the classroom as a support to help my students stay in their seats. The bands will be placed on their desks and chairs because they have a difficult time sitting for a certain period of time. The bands have also been proven to help my students focus on their assignments.
Finally the electric pencil sharpener will be used to complete assignments in a timely manner. Students will have the opportunity to continue their work instead of losing valuable time due to manually sharpening pencils. Yet I truly need your support to make this a reality. Thanks!
