Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

People need to eat to live—and yet, so little behind the science of food and cooking is taught in a traditional classroom. The more I learn about food science as an adult, the more I wish I had the opportunity to make some of these things in my science classes when I was a student.

As an end-of-year unit in my Newcomer classes, I hope to cover a little bit of the science of food by making things like yogurt and ice cream with my students.

We are requesting Mason Jars, Paper Plates, Dawn Ultra Dish Soap, Digital Thermometer, Checkered Chef Cooling Rack for Cooking and Baking, and more.

The yogurt-making lesson will be a perfect way to wrap up the year. While we wait for the milk to heat, then cool, we will explore the biology and chemistry of what's happening inside the Instant Pot. The next day, the students will be able to eat their (hopefully) yogurt, and also have a end-of-year potluck where students can bring a dish from their culture to share if they'd like. This would be a beautiful, delicious way to celebrate year of hard work.

Thank you so much for your support!
