My students are curious, smart, and dedicated. Every day, they come to class prepared to participate and eager to engage in rigorous academic learning. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 50% of my students receiving free lunch. The students who attend my school speak a number of different languages including Arabic, Amharic, Tagalog, and Spanish. Many of my students are English Language Learners. I serve 24 students in my classroom with 9 girls and 15 boys. Of these 24 students, half are English Language Learners.
My Project
Shared reading is a valuable way to allow students scaffolded support to access grade-level text. In order to support shared reading in the class, teachers must have engaging text that all students can have a copy of to highlight and annotate. Currently, our class uses the current events of Scholastic News to support information reading instruction in the classroom. This magazine has been very successful in engage students in informational text, giving me a tool through which to teach informational reading common core standards.
Storywork is a mixed genre magazine, published by Scholastic, that gives students the opportunity to engage with literary common core standards.
Much as I’ve been able to use Scholastic News to support informational reading, I plan to use Storyworks to develop and teach literary reading standards. I plan to develop shared reading lessons that scaffold academic language and embedd important literacy skills. Through direct instruction and graphic organizers, I will use these text to help students support rigorous academic reading skills.
