Share the Joy of Music by Learning the Ukulele!

Help me give my students the ability to learn an instrument in their general music class. With the beautiful sound of the ukulele, students will learn chords and be able to play many popular and folk songs.

My Project

The opportunity to learn an instrument in elementary school is often missed if students cannot afford to rent an instrument of their own. In many schools, the cheapest instrument that is often the 'go to' instrument to learn is the recorder. Although the recorder does have some useful musical purposes, it is most music teachers' and parents' nightmare. The sound is not pleasing to hear and many students learn incorrect recorder technique from playing with/owning a toy recorder at home.

The opportunity to learn the ukulele takes music learning to the next level in the general music class.

Students will learn the anatomy of the ukulele, the note of each string, how each fret moves the note by a half step, and how to form chords to play their favorite songs. Many popular songs and folk songs can be performed with just 3 chords! Students will feel empowered to be able to accompany themselves singing songs they love.

My main goal with this project is to get students excited about learning music, and I believe that the opportunity to learn the ukulele in elementary school will be both educational and add a spark to students' music making that has been lacking.
