Share the Joy of Childhood Classics with ESL Learners

My students need children's classics to build their skills and love for English as a second language.

My Students

There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book. –Marcel Proust

My ESL students are enthusiastic, multi-faceted young teens who come from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic-speaking.

Each day they work to express themselves fully in a second language, and climb steadily towards that goal, many having moved beyond the initial stage of being lost and lonely in a large urban middle school. Now they must persevere to express themselves with precision and successfully decode grade-level readings and content alongside their peers, despite the comparatively limited resources they have to extend their English language and academic learning beyond school walls.

My Project

Let's face it, sometimes the books we're required to read in school are just no fun. For my students, who still need to master the fundamentals of English, the arduous job of decoding these required grade-level texts saps much of the joy of reading. For my recently-arrived students too, they face another kind of disadvantage; not having a similar cultural frame of reference, like the smiling memories you might share with someone who read the same books as you as a child. My students need children's classics. I'd like to give my students a fun break from the tough texts they work with everyday, and give them a chance to enjoy the classic stories many of us read fondly as children, such as Curious George, Madeline, and Peter Pan. Through a reading challenge where students can start at a comfortable level and rotate books, sharing out their reactions and insight along the way, I hope to spark new drive and imagination that can fuel them further forward on their difficult road to building a strong command of English.

The possibilities of what my students can learn from one another and they ways they can enrich our school community are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.

They can then make better sense of their classes and start to feel more at home in their new school. This is what your donation can help accomplish.
