This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My goal for this project is to give my high school geoscience students meaningful, hands-on experiences that help them understand Earth’s processes and think like scientists. I love that my students are highly engaged when they can learn through hands-on activities, and these experiences spark their curiosity about STEM projects and potential STEM careers.

The centerpiece of this project is the United Scientific Earthquake Table, which will allow students to model earthquakes and observe how seismic waves affect Earth’s surface and structures.

By using this table, students will deepen their understanding of plate tectonics, earthquake mechanics, and Earth’s dynamic systems through safe, interactive investigation.

Additional resources—including polarizing filters, filter paper, microscopes, and mineral samples—will support my goal of teaching students how geoscientists study Earth materials. These tools will help students learn about polarization, examine minerals under a microscope, and connect microscopic properties to large-scale Earth processes. Together, these materials will help students build scientific skills, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for geoscience.
