Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an English Language Learner (ELL) school serving approximately 350 students in the Bronx. My students are predominantly immigrants and very ethnically diverse coming from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Yemen, and Honduras. One hundred percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most students are late arrivals and immigrated in middle school or later, and as a result, they often face severe academic challenges having to quickly master new material in a brand new language. These particular students have risen to the top of their senior class and were selected to be members of my AP English Literature class.
My students draw from their varied life experiences to offer astute and thoughtful perspectives on their world and to persevere through the many challenges put in their paths.
My students push me and all those around them on a daily basis to offer the education they deserve and to have the conversations they need. Our students seek to have their voices heard through initiatives like the student council and student government. My students are well aware of the difficulties of their circumstances, yet they are no less determined to make their best effort to succeed.
My Project
My AP English Literature class took on the challenge of reading an unmodified version of Shakespeare's King Lear this year. This is particularly impressive since many of the students are recent immigrants to the country. They even performed scenes from the drama as modernized and adapted versions of the original play.
This class trip would bring Shakespeare's world in King Lear to the stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and allow them to be carried back into the gripping story as it is performed live.
The show first premiered in London and has now made its way to New York City. This trip would give my students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the drama with the added visual elements and to enjoy a cultural excursion at a world class theater. As they continue to build their literary skills, exposure experiences such as this truly demonstrate the power of words to invest them in their own learning and literacy.
