Shakespeare for all! Anime meets the Bard!

My students need a mini-library consisting of 5 copies each of the Manga (Anime) versions of William Shakespeare's classic plays, and illustrated and clear reference books on Shakespeare's life and times.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year's Saturday Academy for Bilingual Enrichment has come to a successful end. Generous donors on this website contributed to a year of exploration of the 9th grade theme of Identity. Our enrichment curriculum was based on Hispanic/Latino artists. We visited the Museum of Modern Art and learned about Picasso, Kahlo, Siquieros, Rivera, Orozco and current artists such as Baca, and De La Vega. We made our own self-portraits and assembled our project display boards with exhibits of what we learned this year. Next year, my classroom has been adopted by the Theatre Development Fund. For this reason and because of the success of Romeo and Juliet in my weekly classes, I have chosen to focus on Drama and the works of William Shakespeare. Next year, our school will have a drama club, open to all students, which will perform Romeo and Juliet in May. Saturdays will be dedicated to intense exposure, and support of the ESL students helping them understand Shakespeare's stories and characters, working on pronunciation and speech and acting, and building their confidence in understanding the performing arts in English. It is my goal to scaffold the Bard's iconic stories through using accessible materials. The Saturday Academy serves students who range from the elementary school level in reading, are overage for their grade, and have had interrupted education, to students who are steps away from being in advanced and mainstream English classes. I have selected the Manga versions of several plays to help the students access the story and support the understanding of the lower level students. Everyone would be reading the same books and the stigma of leveled books would not impact motivation. Our projects will include an in-house performance of a play (group project), Theatre poster and ticket designs, oral presentations w/visual aids, essays, powerpoints, and poetry. Your contribution would enable my students to access the same literature and experiences as mainstream students accross the nation.
