Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is made up of twenty-four, five and six year-olds that are very active and curious. Many of my students come from a low income background and sometimes lack even the basic things. I give them what I can and have built a fun, comfortable and safe place to come to everyday and learn.
Kindergarten is the first exposure to school for most of my kids and making learning fun is very important to me.
I want my students to enjoy coming to school and want them to look forward to coming back day after day. We play a lot of learning games, make some fun crafts and work on engaging group projects.
My Project
Recess is the time for the students to get outside, run around, and enjoy the California sunshine. They ride scooters and tricycles, kick balls, and play on the apparatus. Our blacktop is littered with their chalk artwork. In fact, they can use a small bucket of chalk every couple days. I would like to have a supply of chalk on hand to help support our budding artists. The 120 stick box should keep them supplied for quite a while.
Although they are not very good at it yet, Hula hoops are also very popular on our playground.
It can be very entertaining to watch them learn to hula hoop, and it fills my heart to watch them not give up and to finally figure it out. We need more durable hula hoops on our playground because the two we already have are not enough.
In the past, we have had several hard plastic flying discs and, although the kids love throwing them, we ultimately had to get rid of them because of the potential injuries caused by them. I would like to try out a softer, safer version of the flying disc and see if the students will enjoy throwing those around just as much.
