My second graders are like typical 7 and 8 year olds. They like to socialize, explore and learn about new topics they have never been exposed to. They are interested in learning about the world and creatures around them. Unfortunately, many of their experiences, opportunities and resources are limited because their families are working hard to provide for their families.
I teach 17 wonderful children who are eager to learn.
My school is a Title I school in a military town. We have several families with a parent deployed or have moved several times in one school year. My students were impacted by Hurricane Florence. Many of them are still dealing with the devastating impact it had on our state.
My Project
We are in desperate need of new tables for our classroom. Our current desks are very old and the hardware is worn out. This creates a very wobbly/uneven desks for the students. This problem makes it hard for them to write, work on craft projects and eat snacks. The students become too concerned with trying to make the wiggling stop and the desks to line up straight.
This constant distraction is not necessary and there is an easy solution to help them become more engaged in their learning.
The students would be able to work in small groups more easily with a table that is all the same height. The dry erase tables would be extra beneficial because the students would be able to collaborate with each other and quickly solve math problems.
