Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are great and I am lucky. I teach Family and Consumer Sciences in a rural, low-income school in Northeast Alabama. As a teacher of an elective, I feel honored when my students choose to take one of my classes. They are required to take English, math, history and science, but my classes can be a choice.
Many of my students have jobs they go to after school, or they go home and take care of younger brothers and sisters.
I feel these kids need all the help we can possibly give to them.
My Project
Sewing, math, science, technology and engineering all go hand in hand in the Family and Consumer Science classroom. I am sew excited to be able to write this proposal for my students. They are excited to begin sewing for others and to be able to learn a technique that can give them job skills for the future.
Sewing is an excellent way to encompass STEM learning into the classroom.
We are going to build lap quilts and give them to our local hospice organization for their patients. We have requested different books to give us ideas on different quilts we can make. We have also requested different styles of material that we can use to make lap quilts for the patients at Hospice.
