Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the bravest students on campus because of the many challenges they undertake and the growth they make from the first day of school to the last. They perform in front of different audiences over four times a year and never hide from the stage. My favorite moment with them is the end of the year because of the stories they share about presenting in front of other classes without having any fears.
Sometimes it's not about what kind of person they are in my class, but what kind of human they become in their own lives.
My students have the biggest smiles and friendliest attitudes at the school. We promote and welcome anyone who seems different or "weird" on campus. We collaborate with other groups on campus and help create a positive environment on campus. Often times, my students would prefer to live at school rather than to go home...we actually have had slumber parties on the stage! Haha! The theatre department is a place to have friends, a family, a purpose, and to learn skills to give them a future career.
My Project
In my technical theatre class, we learn many life skills. One that is always a hit is when we learn how to sew pillows or stuffed animals. Students find fabrics that are sentimental, colorful, valuable, or even old t-shirts, and turn them into either pillows or stuffed animals.
Traditionally, we give the pillows or stuffed animals to family members or friends, but I'd like to start making the projects to give back to the community perhaps at a hospital, preschool, shelter, or library.
I am slowly collecting or requesting sewing machines, but they also slowly break or get stolen. I am requesting 2 new smaller sewing machines to easily lock up in cabinets, as well as a large amount of stuffing for us to fluff up the projects. Thank you!
