This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are Hispanic and African-American. They are limited in resources, with over 90% of them qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
We try our best to create an environment that is safe and open while giving them meaningful experiences to enhance their lives.
Many of our students are also teen parents or dealing with identity issues. Due to those factors and lack of resources, many of them are on their own with the responsibility to find shelter and food.
Our students find ways to get creative with limited supplies. They are thankful for new things and look forward to being exposed to new things. Our students come to school for stability and the chance to forget about their circumstances while working to provide a better life for themselves.
My projects are about giving my students the best experiences while they are in school and providing them with what they need to be the best students possible socially, emotionally, physically, and academically.
My Project
One of the coolest activities we did was host sewing classes for our students. They were able to make bags and skirts. During our sessions, we also had a small group discussion focused on building self-efficacy, time management, and problem-solving. Students are able to work on social skills while learning a new skill.
The new version of that experience is sewing from home using machines and materials in this project.
We would host sessions over 4-6 weeks for up to 8 students. We would deliver the materials via contactless delivery, host the sessions virtually, and host a mini-fashion show for them to display what they made. The materials would be picked up via contactless delivery, sanitized, stored for up to 3 weeks and start the process all over again with a new group. The ability to make something is one thing we have seen that our students respond well too and ask for more opportunities like them.
