Your donation not only helped to provide fuel for the students as incentives but also helped students to scientifically examine each donated item in our biology class to see which ones provided different macromolecules to their bodies allowing them to choose their next snack wisely.\r\n\r\nThanks to your contribution, our students have been actively using the new learning materials to explore food systems, nutrition, and the role that marketing plays in shaping their choices. These resources have sparked deep curiosity and empowered them to think critically about what they see in their schools and communities. Students are engaging with this content much like those in national Bite Back initiatives, where young people eagerly interact with branded materials and classroom activities designed to reveal how food companies influence their decisions.\r\n\r\nTheir reactions in our classroom reflected that same level of recognition and emotional connection: surprise, excitement, and ultimately, a desire to understand how these materials work in their bodies. That moment opened the door to one of the most honest and insightful discussions we've had all year.\r\n\r\n\"Hunger & the Molecules of Life\" Mini‑Unit\r\n\r\nWe combine the project and curriculum by having students:\r\n1. Analyze the macromolecule composition of foods they receive through the project.\r\n2. Compare \"high-nutrient\" vs. \"low-nutrient\" foods and discuss energy differences.\r\n3. Reflect on how access to the right macromolecules affects learning, mood, and activity.\r\n\r\nFood Label and Macromolecule Analysis\r\n\r\nWe use a Macromolecule Food Label Activity to help students analyze foods they commonly eat. We connect that to discussions about which foods are more available to food‑insecure students/ families.\r\n\r\nWe use \"Biomolecules on the Menu\" to show how food becomes fuel inside the body. Then discuss what happens when students don't have enough fuel—directly linking biology to hunger‑awareness efforts.\r\n\r\nThe healthy‑snacks project played a meaningful role in enhancing students' understanding of our biology unit on macromolecules. By receiving nutritious snacks during class, students were able to make real‑time connections between the foods they ate and the biological molecules we studied, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids—each of which plays a distinct role in the body's growth, repair, and energy production. Biology resources emphasize that foods contain macromolecules like carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, each broken down into smaller units used by cells for essential functions, allowing students to see the science behind the snacks they enjoyed. This tangible link helped anchor theoretical content in students' lived experience, deepening comprehension and engagement.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the snacks supported hands‑on macromolecule activities in our biology lessons. Students examined real foods for the presence of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins through structured lab and investigative tasks, mirroring recommended inquiry‑based macromolecule lessons. These activities enabled students to identify the molecular components of everyday snacks and link them to their functions in the body. Science inquiry frameworks highlight that macromolecule lessons using food samples strengthen students' ability to identify structure, function, and real‑world relevance, which aligned strongly with our project outcomes. By integrating these snacks into lab work, we transformed them into tools for deeper scientific exploration.\r\n\r\nOverall, the healthy‑snacks project did more than address hunger—it enhanced instructional quality by grounding biological concepts in students' daily experiences. Through this project, students not only learned that food fuels their bodies, but also how different macromolecules contribute to energy, growth, cognition, and health. The integration enriched our science curriculum, strengthened student understanding, and supported both academic and physical well‑being.\r\n\r\nYour generosity is not just funding materials—it's fueling student curiosity, empowering critical thinking, and inspiring young advocates who are ready to shape a healthier future for themselves and their community.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of every student who has lit up with recognition, surprise, or excitement while using the resources you made possible: Thank you for believing in them.","fullyFundedDate":1766067690585,"projectUrl":"project/bite-back-fighting-classroom-hunger/9667440/","projectTitle":"Bite Back: Fighting Classroom Hunger","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Overton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9010933_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753184618036","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9010933"},{"teacherId":8355158,"projectId":9850338,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our project, \"Brewed for Learning: Keeping Students Warm and Motivated!\" Your kindness has truly transformed our classroom in ways that go far beyond a warm cup of cocoa.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment the new resources arrived, my students were buzzing with excitement.
