Help me give my students the experience of sewing their own pioneer items like aprons, scarves, or bandanas as part of our exploration of the Oregon Trail.
This year I have a class of 33 students, but still work with groups of other students during our Enrichment and Intervention time. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but share the same goals and basic needs. My classroom just this year has students that come from English, Spanish, and Vietnamese speaking homes. However, we represent a wide variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and educated backgrounds.
Every student that has walked into my classroom has their own unique gifts and challenges.
They are each amazing young people with the potential to do great things! Some have special learning needs, some are learning the English language, and some have families that are working hard to meet basic needs. I want to make sure that each child gets what they require in my classroom so that I can support them to be the most successful they can be.
My Project
Every year my class is most excited to learn about the Oregon Trail. We work to understand what it was like for those pioneers to leave most of their belongings behind and use what was on hand to survive the trek to the west. One of the ways I would like to help my students understand these early settlers is to use a sewing project. It will amp up the 'fun' factor for them to make their very own apron, scarf, bonnet, or bandana to wear for our Oregon Trail pictures.
Students will get to increase their hand-eye coordination as well as their fine motor skills as they use both hand and machine sewing to create small projects.
They will also gain an appreciation for what goes into making clothing as well as how easy it is for current Oregonians to get what we need. We will begin with hand sewing, then move to a machine for time's sake. This project will use their math skills for measurement, as well as their artistic skills to bring deeper understanding to their Social Studies content.
