I am happy to report that after checking in with that student AFTER getting our new tables, he has said he feels more comfortable and like he has room for his own personal space. While my project was intended for a previous school year, I was able to still utilize these items with my new class this year. Each student received a new dry erase marker and had prepared and sharpened pencils ready on the first day. The sticky notes have been a wonderful tool in our classroom for students to respond to tasks, build community, and even tab our notebooks for each subject. The packaging tape was crucial in preparing the classroom by adding new labels to both our cubbies and book bins. Plus, students won't have to worry about running out of scotch tape thanks to the wonderful refill rolls I now have on hand for them to replenish with. The original national park swag I had hoped to give my students ended up being sold out, so it was a lot of back-and-forth shopping with Donors Choose and Amazon over the past few months to find a good replacement. I can assure you this new national park gift will be a perfect incentive for my artistic group of third graders.\r\n\r\nEach child is going to be receiving a Scratch and Sketch National Parks and Landmarks book at the end of our national park study in May. It's a book that will take them all across America, from the ocean cliffs of Maine's Acadia National Park to the mighty redwoods in California, and from Hawaiian volcanoes to the colossal presidential figures of Mount Rushmore. It's filled with 20 black-coated scratch-off art board pages: 10 with gold and silver glitter colors beneath, and 10 with multi-colored swirls beneath. The illustrations are accompanied with text and illustrations that explain about each NPS site. There is a wooden stylus for scratching the black-coated pages, along with 20 extra blank pages that students can journal, doodle, and record their own adventures in. \r\n\r\nWith how artistic and enthused my students are about studying our national parks, I know these scratch and sketch books will be a huge hit at the end of the year. These items are used during our badge ceremonies each month, where my students dress as Russell from the movie UP and earn badges to apply to a scout sash. The sparkly fairy tree lamp adds a magical touch to our classroom, and the students love sitting near it in our special \"tent\" area while they read.\r\n\r\nI can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to reward my students with the multiple camping themed items your helped to purchase. Next week I plan to give each student a compass keychain belt clip, a national park magnetic book mark, and some camping themed tattoos all wrapped in the paper gifts bags as a send off for winter break. The theme centered around hunger and how it's always so difficult for a child to learn when their tummy is growling. I can't tell you want a relief, and time saver, it is to have a stash of nutritious granola bars I can quickly give to a hungry third grader. This allows them to get back on track quickly without having to wait till lunch\r\n\r\nThese snacks have also been very beneficial for my after school reading group. We meet twice a week for an extra 2 hours to help grow their reading skills, which is a long time for a 2nd/3rd grader. Because of this Donors Choose Project, I can now offer them two snacks each session, which has been a huge moral booster and motivator to work for!\r\n\r\nLastly, as my students earn compliments around the school for their hard work in music, or lining up quietly at recess, I am using these snacks to say \"thank you\" for their respectful behavior. My students get SO excited when they are given one of the treats, as they never know which one it's going to be. Having this large variety of food items at my finger tips during different times of the day and been such a blessing. Meanwhile, the six new pairs of headphones are snapped and used throughout every class period. We are anxiously awaiting the new read aloud books to help with our emotional regulation as well.\r\n\r\nAs we head into towards the middle of the year, students are working on deeper math thinking, longer writing projects, and reading books with more complex vocabulary.
