I teach 18 amazing, unique, and hardworking 8th graders! They all have individualized education plans, qualify for special education services, and strive to achieve their personal goals.
As a special education teacher, I see my students face and overcome academic, behavioral, and social challenges daily.
Despite how hard my students work all year, they really struggle to stay caught up in their general education classes. In the past, many of them have been recommended for Summer School. We now have a Summer Enrichment program that offers a variety of classes designed to engage students while teaching and reinforcing skills that can be applied to real life.
I teach in a Title 1 school where 50% of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Our Summer Enrichment program is offered four days a week, includes lunch, and comes at zero cost to the parents!
My Project
During our Summer Enrichment Sewing Class, beginning sewers will learn the basics of using a sewing machine. To start, we will make some smaller projects using scraps of fabric and gently used materials. As students become more comfortable and proficient, they will work in small groups to make baby quilts that will be donated at the end of the class.
In addition to learning how to use a sewing machine, students will learn and apply a variety of math skills, collaborate with a group, and give back to those in need.
For this project, we'll need beginner's sewing machines, fabric, thread, and various quilting tools. With these materials, my students will learn valuable life skills while having fun! Thank you so much for considering our project!
