Setting Up a New Sensory Space for Strong Learners

My students need markers, books, and sensory and developmentally appropriate tools to build a strong and engaging learning environment.

My Students

My students are 25 special children from all over the city of Boston. They are still learning to read, write, and some, are learning to speak English. They are extremely diverse, African American, Hispanic, Asian, multi-racial, English language learners, non-English language learners, special education, and general education students. To meet their diverse needs, we are in need of some supplies to engage all students and teach them initiative, drive, and independence. My students have been in the same classroom space for multiple years. I would like to introduce flexible seating this year to make our classroom more student-centered, developmentally appropriate, and choice oriented. Flexible seating benefits are abundant and can result in the mental and physical improvement of all students.

My Project

"Current research in the areas of movement and learning shows that children need and deserve flexible and alternative seating in an environment where they spend almost the whole day five days a week." -Janina Yimenez, Educating for Eternity.

In order to provide the best instruction possible, I meet with children in small, instructional level based groups of no more than 6 children.

I teach children to make strong, independent choices to further their learning while I work with others on targeted, relevant instruction. I want to transform our classroom into a student-centered learning environment.

We need flexible seating spaces so students feel comfortable and engaged in their work. Students will be given the option to choose where they sit, on stools, crates, in laundry baskets, or in their seats with fidget tools.

Our classroom space needs properly organized materials, so students can complete tasks independently without interrupting small group instruction or disturbing their peers. This includes new markers, highlighters for marking up the text, pencils, pencil sharpers, colored paper, lined paper, scissors, and organizing cases to keep our materials in (to save instructional time!).

Finally, we need new books! We need books that have diverse main characters so that students of all backgrounds can relate and "see themselves" in the text. I was this group's 2nd grade teacher as well, so they have thoroughly read most of my books! I am hoping to get them hooked on series that spark their interest, and therefore have ordered a range of books from fiction, to non-fiction, historical-fiction, comic books, and more.
