My students need to be able to access technology on a daily basis for educational purposes. Many of our enrichment activities contain online components, and Kindle Fire will help IGNITE learning!
The 21st century student is innovative, imaginative, and creative. They need to be challenged to think critically to solve problems that didn't exist even five years ago. Technology should be an integral part of their education as many of the jobs that young adults are getting are technology based, and studies show that around 70% of 21st century jobs haven't even been invented yet.
In my school, technology is definitely emphasized, but personal devices have been discouraged as they were not being used for educational purposes and were causing distraction.
I wanted a way to be able to still use technology in the classroom without making the use of personal devices necessary. My students love the idea of having a class set of devices to be able to research and play critical thinking games to enhance learning.
My Project
Students will be able to collaborate using Kindle Fire on reading concepts, using Kahoot online quizzes, MobyMax educational enrichment, audiobooks, and Google Classroom. They will also use the Kindle Fire tablets to create movies and book reviews, which will allow them to bring reading to life and make learning relevant.
At our school, students are only allowed access to school-provided technology and must lock up the or cell phones upon entering the school.
Although it cuts down on distraction, it causes difficulty for teachers who want to incorporate technology in their classrooms. We only have enough laptops and computers for around 10% of students, so I know adding 10 tablets to my classroom will increase student access to technolog to reach approximately 30% of our 7th graders.
I hope to be able to acquire a full class set eventually, but allowing students to share and collaborate in groups of 3 is a great start!
