Help me give my students volleyballs, athletic wear, kneepads, and shorts. A 6th grade student started our club and 35 girls showed up, most in jeans. We had 4 balls, 2 were soccer balls. Let's do this!
We are a Title 1 school that serves a very diverse range of students from all backgrounds. We have a unique opportunity to empower and encourage teenagers from many contexts. We are connected with Florida Baptist Children's Home and have many teenagers who are currently in foster care.
As a title one school, the majority of our students come from low-income households and as such, they often do not have the resources to afford club sports, this makes our need as a public school very real.
We have students learning English as a second language and students who practice American Sign Language as a first language. These are just a couple of contexts from which our students learn.
We also have very gifted learners who are excelling in advanced classes. Title one funds help us support many different types of students.
Unfortunately, funding for middle schools sports is almost nonexistent. The only revenues used to fund sports comes from the gate and it is used to cover transportation and referees. This leaves nothing to cover the costs of equipment, uniforms, fees, training, etc.
My Project
The athletic equipment--like volleyballs, athletic wear, kneepads, and shorts--required to play volleyball is minimal, but when it's present and available, every girl is able to learn, grow, set goals, and develop as a leader in the volleyball club and feel confidence when deciding to try out for the volleyball team.
Every girl deserves a chance to be successful as a student athlete regardless of race, context, socio-economic background.
While some families have the ability to provide support for their students, the overwhelming majority at a Title 1 school are limited due to financial strains within their family.
These donations will provide a level playing field for all students regardless of socio-economic background and provide them the opportunity to learn the valuable life lessons that playing on a sports team provides!
More than half of students from low‑income households
