This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title 1 neighborhood school in the Bronx with over 900 K-5 diverse students. Our students and their families come from all around the world - Europe, Central and South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa - and many are English Language Learners.

Some students face challenges such as homelessness, and arrive each day from a shelter next door and other transient living arrangements.

We are building a safe learning community where positive and trusting relationships can thrive and students can learn.

My Project

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. Little Free Library book exchanges have a unique, personal touch. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their community; Little Libraries have been called “mini-town squares.” from littlefreelibrary.org

Being the school librarian at PS8 Bronx, I have a constant flow of donated and weeded books to give away.

I also administer a Reading Ambassador club, 4th and 5th graders enthusiastic about spreading the love of books throughout our school community. This project would give these students the opportunity to finish/paint/decorate the Little Library and help to maintain the book collection to be shared with the community.

The plan is to set up the Little Library right outside the front door of the school or in the school playground which is open to the public after school. Reading Ambassadors would research, discuss, and decide on the most effective location and present their plan to administrators as part of this service project.
