Service Projects Building Positive Self-Esteem

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to craft to build their self esteem as well as find a healthy way to use their time with a variety of materials to reach every learner.

My Project

I teach a female human relations class at our local high school. This class consists of female students with learning and/or behavioral concerns who qualify for special education services. In this class students learn a variety of ways to keep themselves healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally. We do this is through teaching crafting. The repetition of the crafts has been shown to release serotonin, a natural anti-depressant.

Projects also help build self-esteem.

It is amazing to watch students growth through helping others by donating their crafts throughout the local community. One goal includes giving each student an opportunity to share with others. Reaching out to young children through the elderly in our community helps our high school students realize the depth of needs over a large age span.

By completing service projects for our local community, students learn more about themselves and others. The time they spend crafting is a great way to talk about everyday issues teenage girls are facing. The experience of giving their handcrafted gifts to local residents is rewarding both mentally and emotionally.

Through crafting, these students learn a healthy way to live physically, mentally, and emotionally.
