Service Learning Builds Character!

Help me give my students the coffee, chai, hot tea, hot cocoa, and condiments needed to operate a hot beverage service-learning project.

My Students

I teach special education in a self-contained classroom for students who are learning social/emotional and behavioral skills. My students are inspiring. Every one of them wants to be successful in academics, with peers, and with adults. These learners may or may not be behind peers in academics, but they currently all have high emotional and behavioral needs.

For students who have emotional/behavioral disabilities, a service-learning project is not only an opportunity for students to demonstrate gratitude for others and work collaboratively but also has the possibility to help build a sense of pride and accomplishment.

This project would also have a focus on time management, following directions, and math skills.

Our school's mission is "We believe, achieve, and succeed!" which means we wholeheartedly believe our students will achieve and succeed in all areas of life. My students are growing at a rapid rate. My students may have emotional needs, but they are also some of the most pro-social justice and loving kiddos I know. They just haven't yet learned how to channel those skills and build them to be successful with other people.

My Project

These hot beverage supplies will allow students to run a hot beverage cart service-learning project. These beverages will be served to school staff, along with a note of gratitude every Friday.

The students will run a complimentary hot beverage cart for staff on Fridays.

The students would be responsible for taking the teachers' orders by the end of every Thursday. On Friday, we would help the students prepare and deliver the orders. All beverages would be complimentary. Students would learn time - management, following directions, and math skills as well as developing skills in collaborative learning.
