Our school is made up of a diverse population located in the Rocket City. Because of the presence of NASA and Redstone Arsenal, we have many military families who move in and out of the area. We also have unbelievable growth. We have used every classroom, closet, nook and cranny in our school. Our school also contains a special education unit with students who are integrated into the regular classroom. Finally, we have students who have transferred from other parts of the city to our school.
All of these differences allow for a rich diversity of students in our school.
Because of this, our students have learned about different cultures and learning styles. Instead of seeing this as a barrier, we have learned to celebrate our differences. This is possible through a strong mission statement and school wide theme that unites our students each day. "Owl be Respectful, Owl be Responsible, Owl be Resourceful and Owl be Ready!"
My Project
Through the use of high interest series books, students will read more as they become engaged with the characters. When they become invested in the story line they will read more and find a love of reading.
This project will allow my students to build independence while becoming better readers.
The availability of the tablet and stand will allow my students to check-out books from our class library. This will make our classroom library more accessible and interactive for my students, while teaching them an applicable life skill. Due to the amount of transient students, it will allow me to keep track of the books.
The growth of our school is rapidly increasing and therefore it is often difficult to get the resources necessary for our learners. Having a classroom library and check-out system will provide the materials for a positive reading classroom.
