My Students

My amazing students have just entered first grade, which is a time of tremendous academic, social, and emotional growth. Throughout the year, I work hard to give these cute students a variety of experiences to enhance their skills as readers, writers, mathematicians, musicians, artists, friends, and citizens.

My classroom is a place where learning is loud, hands-on, student-centered, and rewarding.

Students in my school come with a wide variety of academic and social needs. Some come from stable, affluent backgrounds, and others need more support in the classroom because their home life is rough. Because of this wide range in abilities, perspectives, talents, and needs, I need to diversify my instruction in every subject, every day.

My Project

In first grade, students fall in love with literature. As they do this, they are discovering a whole new world of book characters who go through a wide variety of adventures. I read aloud multiple times each day to my students. While it is great for my readers to fall in love with these series while I am reading them, I am looking for more.

There is special power when students can take ownership and have these book series in their individual book bins to use during independent reading time.

I often will read a book to students and they will come up and ask me where they can find that book in my classroom library. Sadly, I have to tell these students that I do not have them. Students long to have repeated readings of books that they have heard. They love to retell the stories they love to one another using pictures. These books can be loved, read time and time again, and held in the hands of our great young readers.
