My Students

This year I told my students the key to enjoying to read is discovering what type of book you enjoy. They have taken me at my word and tried a variety of books: historical fiction, modern fiction, mystery, biographies, etc.

The best word to describe my students is varied!

I am the only English teacher at a small, rural middle high/high school, so I see every student. I teach one class for each grade (7-12), and each class is different. One class likes Shakespeare, another class likes mythology, and others really prefer more realistic, modern fiction.

My Project

The books I have requested will appeal to most of my students. The Bluford Series contains the realistic characters and modern setting that appeals to my freshman and junior classes. We can read the first book (Lost and Found) as a class, and then we will have the other titles available for individual reading assignments. The Shakespeare Stealer is a great book for sophomores who will be reading Hamlet, and the Percy Jackson series is ideal for my seventh graders who have been asking me when we can read the Lightning Thief as a class.

You can never go wrong by encouraging a child to read.

Books open the door to a new world while helping students develop the skills to succeed in their own world. When you support this project, you support the discussions I get to have with my students about right and wrong, the importance of family and friends, and the value of trust. You support their interactions, their communication skills and their mental development.
