"How do I make this _________ look like a product I'd buy at the mall?" This question has been asked of me many times and the only truthful answer I can give is that they can't...at least not without a serger!
My classroom is a place for students to learn through hands-on, real life activities.
I teach a variety of classes, ranging from Foods and Nutrition to Parenting to Clothing and Textiles to grades 6-12. My public school is located in a very rural, low income area, therefore funding is difficult to come by. Over the course of the last 3 years, I've expanded my Clothing and Textiles to the point where I'm drawing students in who have a genuine interest in apparel construction and design - students who want to make it a career.
My Project
With the addition of just one Serger, my students can take their fashion and apparel projects to the next level. My beginning students can create a more professional seam in their beginning projects and better understand seam finishing. Many of my advanced students are interested in careers in the fashion industry and could use some experience on a serger before they go on to post-secondary education. Having some first-hand knowledge of this new type of sewing machine will give them a better feel for how textile products are constructed and created in the world of the shopping mall.
Having a Serger in my classroom will enable many students to go to the next level with clothing construction and design.
It will teach them to use a more sophisticated piece of equipment and will allow them to make a more professional, finished project. For many students, it will be the next step on the path of their career.
