My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and more than 80% of our students participate in free and reduced lunch. Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere. We are working to ensure that the Media Center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their goals.
My Project
Our Media Center is a place for students to gather for a myriad of purposes. There is a section for class instruction, a section for computer use, and a section for book stacks. These areas are wonderful, but to truly take advantage of the room we have, we need a way to section off parts of the room for specific purposes.
The front portion of the Media Center is a large, open space full of potential.
With stanchion posts and ropes, we can guide incoming students towards the welcome desk to sign in. In the empty space near the circulation desk, the fluffy rugs will be used to create a cozy spot for students to read silently.
