My Students
My students overcome obstacles every day that might seem simple to the average person. I get the joy of teaching students with multiple disabilities; including physical, cognitive delays and intellectual disabilities such as down syndrome and autism.
Despite their disabilities, my students are funny, creative, smart and caring towards each other.
We are a specialized school within the NYC Dept. of Education located in Queens. Each day in our classroom is an adventure filled with opportunities to learn and grow. My students need materials to help increase their independence and communication.
My Project
No pandemic will stop me from helping my students learn the skills they need to be successful in life. My students will be learning both in the classroom and at home and this will prove to be a challenge for them. It will be difficult to grasp the concepts and skills they need to succeed during the school year without the proper supplies.
By creating tactile materials that can be used at home, I can invite my students to participate in learning.
I can use the materials requested to model for the parents what they can do to help support their children. The paper, ink, laminating sheets and Velcro will help me create accessible worksheets that will be used by my students in their homes. The scanner will allow me to send individualized tasks that are used in school home to the parents in order for them to meet their IEP goals. My students have severe and multiple disabilities and need as many tactile supports as they can.
