The use of individualized visual schedules supports routines and transitions within the classroom. Students have an expectation of the day's activities and use the schedule to finish one activity before transitioning to another. Schedules are differentiated with the use of objects, photos or symbols to represent all classroom activities. Since our students are non-ambulatory, we require a large amount of velcro to display schedules and remove them to provide the students with access. In addition, using velcro empowers the students to be the managers of their own schedules by allowing the child to change the symbols without help. This increases independence and also leads to an increase in the student's confidence.
Visual schedules increases students' independence and their schedules allow them to complete their daily tasks without surprises which decreases challenging behavior. The students have time to know what activity is coming next and even if they are not happy, they will transition easier. This helps the classroom run smoother and helps promote learning at all times.
