Sentinel Copter Club is Grounded! Please Help!

We need six Dromida Ominus quadcopters so we can learn to fly radio-controlled multicopters.

Mr. Lande Sentinel High School
Missoula, MT Grades 9-12

About My Students

The SHS Copter Club is comprised of Doug, Kincaide, Jackson, Jackson (#2), James, Oliver, Ryan, and Sam and along with myself (Mr. Lande) and Mrs. Schultz. We have been meeting at lunch all year, but these dedicated students are ready to learn to fly in a safe and responsible manner.

During one of our weekly meetings, my students brainstormed about what type of multi-rotors we could purchase so that they could practice flying. They came up with several criteria: affordable, durable, large enough to fly outside, yet small enough to fly in the gym during the winter, and a full-size transmitter that would be similar to those used on larger (and more expensive) copters. They then researched online to find some copters that fit those criteria. We then made a pros and cons list for each copter. In the end, we narrowed the choice down to the Dromida Ominus quadcopter. These copters will fit their criteria perfectly and allow them to learn all the skills they need to become expert multi-rotor pilots.

My students will learn many STEM related skills if we receive these quadcopters. They will learn about electrical systems and about the science of flight. We will look at some of the mathematics behind multi-rotors including calculations for how much thrust is generated. They will learn about the payoff from dedication and practice. It is not easy for everyone to learn to fly; it takes hard work and a lot of practice. My students will work together and support each other in learning the skills they need to be successful pilots. Our students have a long-term goal of competing in the UAS4STEM Search and Rescue Challenge. This competition will require them to work together to build a multi-rotor and then compete in a challenge to find a group of lost hikers. It will be a culmination of a year of hard work and dedication. But, first they need to learn to fly and the support of this project will allow them to do so.

In Their Own Words

We are part of a copter club at our high school and are seeking six quadcopters so we can gain vital flying experience and prepare for an upcoming competition. Most of us don't have our own equipment, and we need quadcopters to learn to fly. We need to be able to practice in order to actually fly them with precision. We have found Dromida Ominus quadcopters. These should be great machines for giving us the ability to get better at flying.

We are all going to take part in the activities and learn the basics so we can all fly the quadcopters and participate in events. We have a team of committed people wanting to follow through and come to the regular weekly meetings. This will teach us skills that will be important to a technologically-backed future and bring us closer to what the physical connotations of that technology means. We also plan to help with spreading the word and contacting businesses to get this project funded.

The SHS Copter Club wants to be advocates for the safe and responsible use of multi-rotors. These quadcopters will be the first step towards learning the flying skills we need. We will use them for practical and fun purposes. This project is important because it can help students like us learn about the science of flight and also create a fun and relaxed club environment. In the future, we can expand to larger copters that will allow us to take video and photos from new perspectives.
